Ezekiel's closing vision of the measured temple, the atoning prince, and the life-giving river shows that despite Israel's sin and rebellion God is determined to dwell with his people, a promise now fulfilled in Jesus Christ who tore the curtain and became the temple himself.

After Israel's idolatry with the golden calf, God offers his people the land without his presence, but Moses refuses that deal because God's gracious presence; not blessings or success; is his people's greatest gift and identity, a presence secured for us fully through Christ's mediation.

You cannot reverse what your sin has ruined, but God can reverse it, and it is his zeal for his own glory and name; not your worthiness; that guarantees he will restore his oppressed, dead, and defeated people.

The same God who unleashes his sword to destroy Israel's ancient enemies; and, beneath them, Satan himself; turns that same sword to fight for his people, so that whether God's face is terror or joy depends entirely on whether you are his enemy or his child, a battle finally won by Christ.

Preaching through Ezekiel 17-24, Gilbert argues that Israel's self-assurance; both the false confidence that judgment would never fall and the presumption that any coming salvation would be deserved; is exactly what God dismantles before finally striking Jerusalem, and that same self-assurance is deadly for hearers today because it blinds people to judgment and flatters them about their own worthiness.

Psalm 130 answers the question 'what is the gospel' by showing that God both marks iniquity in judgment and forgives it completely through Christ, who bore that iniquity, so that the redeemed can wait and hope in God's word with confident assurance.

Psalm 84 pictures the Christian life as a pilgrimage to God's dwelling place: it begins with a heart-desire for worship, continues through a difficult and dangerous valley where God supplies supernatural strength, and arrives at the settled conviction that nearness to God is worth any cost.

Working through Ezekiel 12-16, Gilbert argues that God always keeps his promises without exception; he fulfilled to the letter the covenant curses of judgment against unfaithful Israel (Zedekiah's capture, the false prophets exposed, the fruitless vine burned), and he will just as surely keep his promise in Ezekiel 16 to establish an everlasting covenant of forgiveness, a promise made possible only because the judgment Israel earned falls instead on Jesus at the cross.

Psalm 2 announces that the world has been promised to the Messiah; Jesus, God's anointed Son and King; and because that is where history is headed, hearers must plan their lives accordingly, submitting to his rule rather than raging against it.

Psalm 1 presents two ways to live; the blessed way and the way that perishes; and shows that Jesus alone lived the perfect blessed life, so that joining 'the congregation of the righteous' comes not through self-righteousness but through repentance and faith in him.

Israel's idolatry in the temple was an intolerable offense that drove God's glory out in stages, yet even as judgment fell God was already present as a sanctuary to the exiles, promising a new heart and new covenant far greater than the sin that provoked his departure.

In Ezekiel 4-7, God dismantles through acted-out judgments everything Israel wrongly leaned on instead of him; covenant presumption, city, land; showing that his judgment is horrifying yet perfectly just, and that even in unrelenting judgment his mercy breaks through in a small preserved remnant, fulfilled ultimately in Christ who bore sin rather than merely displaying it.

The vision Ezekiel receives on the banks of the Kebar canal answers the exiles' fear that Yahweh had been defeated by Babylon's gods: God's throne has wheels and is not bound to any temple or land, and he still reigns and still speaks even to a hard-hearted, exiled people.

Because their citizenship and hope are in heaven, believers must press on to the end by cultivating humility, forgetting both past sins and past successes, and imitating godly examples in genuine community rather than looking out only for themselves.

To the Christian, Jesus is everything, so believers must reject false gospels and confidence in their own works and instead rejoice in the Lord, resting their whole salvation; union, justification, sanctification, and glorification; on Christ alone.

Jesus never leaves a person's faith where he finds it; through delay and interruption he deliberately pushes real but flawed or small faith; whether talismanic and misdirected or sincere but limited; into something deeper, personal, and resurrection-sized.

Jesus' rebuking of the storm and his casting out of the legion of demons are the same act of divine authority over evil, both cosmic and personal; therefore, though there are real reasons to fear, believers should trust the one who has absolute authority over every dark power that threatens them.

Hearing the word of God is never neutral; you can hear it without truly receiving it (hard, rocky, or thorny soil), but when the word genuinely takes root in good soil, it will inevitably and visibly produce fruit in a person's life.

A person's love for Jesus is always proportional to their awareness of how much they've been forgiven; the sinful woman's extravagant devotion flowed from knowing her debt was canceled, while Simon's polite, distant hospitality revealed he didn't think he needed much forgiveness at all.

John's account of the piercing of Jesus' side and the honoring burial by Joseph and Nicodemus reveals Jesus as the fulfillment of Old Testament pictures; the Passover lamb, the pierced one of Zechariah, and the stricken rock; inviting hearers to look at the crucified king and be changed.

When Jesus doesn't meet your expectations you will be tempted to remake him in your own image, but you must receive Jesus as he truly is or you do not receive him at all.

Jesus is trustworthy because his authority is absolute and his mercy is astonishing, as shown in the healing of the centurion's servant and the raising of the widow's son at Nain; one story showing great faith rewarded, the other showing mercy given to someone who could not even ask.

Jesus' Sermon on the Plain sets an impossibly high standard; to be merciful and loving exactly as God is merciful and loving; which exposes that none of us can meet it, driving us to Jesus, who alone meets the standard and gives it to us as a gift.

Man-made religion, symbolized by the Pharisees' legalistic Sabbath rules, can blind people to Jesus's true identity and authority and to compassion for others, so believers must guard against letting religious practice replace genuine encounter with Christ.

Every human who has ever lived is utterly hopeless in their sin unless the Lord redeems, so we must repent, trust his word, and wait for his sure and plentiful redemption.

God is always worthy of praise because of who he is and what he has done, and Psalm 103 grounds that praise in five deep theological truths about God's disposition toward sinners.

The implanted word of God produces a visible faith that changes a believer's posture toward anger and speech, turns hearing into doing, and leads to practical love and purity, exposing the danger of spiritual self-deception in Bible-rich environments.

Abraham's intercession for Sodom and God's rescue of the compromised Lot both point forward to the truth that our only hope of salvation rests not in our own righteousness but solely in God's chosen mediator, Jesus Christ.

Because Christians already know how the future certainly ends, that knowledge should determine what they flee now (false teachers who crave controversy and money) and what they fight for now (righteousness, godliness, and hope set on God rather than riches).

Paul teaches that unity in the church depends on love, and that love works itself out concretely in mutual respect, care, and responsibility across every relationship in the body; toward the aged and widows, toward elders, and toward those we serve under (employers).

Paul presents two paths in 1 Timothy 4: one of departing from the faith by devoting oneself, decision by decision, to false teaching that calls God's good gifts bad, and one of training for godliness by devoting oneself to sound doctrine, and every believer is moving toward one destination or the other through small daily choices.

What you believe about how the leadership of the church functions reveals what you believe the church exists to do; elders care for God's people by teaching, deacons care for the church by meeting practical needs, and together the church exists to proclaim and protect the gospel.

The gospel transforms both how believers relate to the watching world; through evangelistic prayer and quiet, godly living; and how they relate to one another within the church, including how men and women worship and are ordered under Christ's headship.

False teachers distort and distract from God's truth by misusing the law (through antinomianism or legalism), but faithful shepherds know and are transformed by the true gospel of grace, and must guard the flock, even to the point of church discipline, for God's glory.

God's promises always provoke a response; some receive them with believing faith like Abraham in chapter 17, others meet them with disbelieving laughter like Sarah in chapter 18; yet the covenant itself rests wholly on God's unilateral grace, not on human performance.

When Abraham and Sarah tried to force God's promise to completion through Hagar rather than trusting him, the result was total chaos in their household, yet God's determination to keep his covenant and his compassion for the afflicted never wavered, even confronting sin before comforting it.

The covenant God unilaterally cuts with Abraham in Genesis 15, in which God alone walks between the pieces, shows that salvation depends solely and completely on God's faithfulness to keep his promise and not at all on human contribution; faith simply receives what God alone accomplishes.

Fear of the world can only be conquered by fear of the Lord, which Psalm 33 presents in two forms: trembling awe before God's awesome greatness displayed in creation and providence, and confident, hopeful trust in his abundant goodness toward those who wait on him.

Because Christians have been given the indwelling Holy Spirit, the war between flesh and spirit is not a fight they wage alone or by law-keeping effort, but one the Spirit himself wages within them, slowly but certainly producing fruit as they walk in step with him.

The gospel of Christ comes from God and not from man, and the proof of its divine origin is that it can save even the worst of sinners, as seen in Paul's own conversion from a violent persecutor of the church to an apostle of Christ.

Abraham's decisions in Genesis 13-14 to trust God's promise rather than grasp for land or riches show that everything the world offers; wealth, security, status; pales beside what God gives in Christ, and God's people must live accordingly by faith rather than by sight.

Judah's transformation from a self-serving, superficially righteous schemer into a man willing to sacrifice himself for his brother shows that people really can change because God's grace is real, and that change ultimately points forward to the greater Judah, Jesus Christ.

Esau's life, traced across five scenes in Genesis, is a warning that you were made for more than today's pleasure and tomorrow's prosperity; settling for temporary comfort while remaining apathetic toward God's promises is the saddest possible outcome of a life.

Luke structures the Capernaum episode (the demon's expulsion, the healing of Peter's mother-in-law, and the wider healings) as a chiasm that highlights Jesus' authoritative teaching, showing that Jesus is worthy of trust because his word alone can defeat hell and heal humanity, and that word is always rooted in and consistent with the Old Testament Scriptures.

The gospel of Jesus Christ is for the desperate, not the entitled; pride in its many forms; intellectual, personal, moral, local; slams the door on grace, while only those who know themselves helpless and poor in spirit can receive the Messiah's invitation.

The temptation of Jesus in the wilderness is not a training video showing believers how to defeat temptation themselves, but Jesus acting as king and champion who fights and wins the battle against Satan on behalf of his people, a battle Israel and all humanity had already lost.

Luke's genealogy in Luke 3:23-38 proves that Jesus, through Mary's bloodline and Joseph's legal royal line, has every legal and biological right to be Israel's Messiah and King, while also establishing him as fully human (son of Adam) and fully divine (son of God), the only qualified Savior and substitute.

You say you want to be included in God's kingdom when it comes; well then repent of your sins and embrace your king, because John's preaching prepares hearts to recognize and receive the Messiah, and Jesus himself now stands as the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit or with fire of judgment.

At twelve years old in the temple, Jesus came to understand in his human nature who he was as the Messiah, and that self-knowledge led him not to self-assertion but to submission and obedience; modeling for Christians that true identity in Christ produces a life of service to God and others rather than the world's call to 'find yourself' and cast off restraint.

In our obedience to the Lord, he will be glorified and will pour out his blessings on his people; so obey him, even when the work feels small, unclean, or fruitless.

In Jesus' presentation at the temple, God reveals amid the chaos and noise of a fallen world that this baby is his own salvation; the consolation of Israel, the hope of all nations, and the fulfillment of every longing heart; so life is not, as Macbeth despaired, sound and fury signifying nothing.

Preaching from Luke 2:8-16 against the backdrop of the hymn 'Silent Night,' Stiles argues that the angel's announcement to the shepherds reveals both the shape of true faith; trusting that the baby in the manger is already King, Savior, and Lord; and the shape of holiness, since the deepest sin is unbelief and ultimately the rejection of Jesus as Lord, while holiness is imparted only through faith in him.

Luke begins his gospel by carefully establishing the eyewitness-based certainty of the Jesus story, yet immediately follows with Zechariah's doubt in the temple to show that even the most prepared believer can waver; and that God often uses enforced silence to move a person from doubt to settled faith.

Human resolve and vow-making before God always fail and prove futile, as Nehemiah 11-13 demonstrates when the covenant renewal of chapter 10 collapses almost immediately in chapter 13; the only escape from this cycle of futility is not trying harder but trusting in Jesus Christ, who alone succeeded in fulfilling God's law and offers his righteousness to those who come to him in faith.

The resurrection of Jesus is not a religious metaphor for new life but a historical, bodily event that vindicates Jesus's claims about himself and confronts every hearer with a decision to trust him or reject him.

On Good Friday we rightly both mourn and celebrate, because Jesus's three cries from the cross; 'Father, forgive them,' 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me,' and 'It is finished'; reveal him as a man of unfathomable love, the sin-bearer who endured God's wrath in our place, and the victor who has won access to God and the defeat of sin and death for his people.

In Nehemiah 8-10 the returned exiles sincerely turn to God's word and sincerely repent, yet their attempt to re-up the broken Mosaic covenant is refused by God because that covenant cannot be repaired; being right with God requires not just a sincere resolve but a redeemer who establishes a new covenant.

As the wall-building phase of Nehemiah ends, the narrative pivots from constructing a physical structure to forming a people; God is building not buildings or ministries but a covenant people marked by mutual care, courage in the face of fear-mongering, and worship, and that people remains incomplete without the great high priest, Jesus, whom Nehemiah's Israel still lacked.

Through his healing touch, Jesus the Christ gives spiritual sight, but it rarely happens all at once; as shown in the two-stage healing of the blind man at Bethsaida and Peter's still-partial confession that Jesus is the Christ.

The work of the kingdom; whether rebuilding Jerusalem's walls in Nehemiah's day or building Christ's church today; requires the total, all-in commitment of every member of God's people, paired with a muscular faith that trusts God completely while still taking decisive, practical action.

Nehemiah's confidence before God, his courage in danger, and his commitment to God's reputation all flowed from the same source: he genuinely knew the God he served, and that knowledge; not mere willpower or passive waiting on God; is what created and fueled everything he needed for the task before him.

Paul's final words in Ephesians 6 reveal that the Christian life is fundamentally cosmic warfare against Satan and demonic powers, not against people, and Christians must know this enemy, put on Christ's own armor now given to them, and above all wage war through relentless prayer.

Faith; not religious pride, legalism, or works; is what gains the favor of the Lord, and the Canaanite woman models this faith as humble, desperate, and confident, in contrast to Israel's legalistic unbelief.

Legalism; believing that what we do is why God loves us; is not just wrong but stupid, because it misdiagnoses the real problem: what separates us from God is not outward habits but our own hearts, a problem only Jesus' cross and resurrection can solve.

Because Christians are new creations who imitate God as beloved children, that new identity must transform every part of life; first calling them to live as beings of light rather than darkness (especially regarding sexual immorality), and second calling them to a distinctly Christian love and submission within marriage, parenting, and work relationships.

Because God is one and holy, the church must express that reality by pursuing unity through the fruit of the Spirit and purity by putting off the old self and putting on the new self.

The eternal plan of God for all of history was to create one new humanity out of Jews and Gentiles united in Christ, and this reconciled church; not the stars, nations, or empires; is God's chosen showcase of his manifold wisdom before the rulers and authorities in heaven and hell.

Through Christ's death, Gentiles who were once utterly alienated from God, from the covenants, and from Israel have been reconciled both to God and to Jewish believers, forming one new humanity and being built together into God's temple, the church.

If you are a Christian, God has stunningly saved you from an utterly hopeless situation of spiritual death, slavery to sin and Satan, and condemnation, and has raised you up and seated you with Christ in unspeakable blessing.

Ephesians 1 shows that a Christian's fundamental identity is not any other label but 'Christian,' because the triune God; Father, Son, and Spirit; has unilaterally chosen, redeemed, and sealed believers before they did anything to earn it.

The birth of Jesus in Matthew 1-2 forces a response from everyone who encounters him; you cannot remain neutral or ignore him; and Matthew calls readers to worship him as God, bow to him as King, trust him as Savior, and love him as friend.

Matthew's genealogy of Jesus is not a boring list but a deliberate theological argument that Jesus is the long-promised king in David's line, yet a king who shows mercy to outcasts and sinners while remaining committed to justice and eventual judgment.

God's promise to Abraham in Genesis 12:1-3 is his decisive answer to the tragedy of Genesis 1-11, launching a plan to send a coming king who will reverse the curse and bless every nation, and Abraham's response of leaving everything to go is at its heart an act of trust that all who are in Christ are called to imitate.

True, lasting success comes not from high status or possessions but from humble trust in God's word, as seen in Naaman's healing through simple obedience and Gehazi's downfall through greed and unbelief.

Genesis 10-11 uses the Table of Nations and the Tower of Babel to show that humanity is unified in its brokenness and rebellion against God, and yet God still offers grace through the escape line leading to Abraham.

God's covenant with Noah after the flood is entirely his own unilateral, gracious act, made in full knowledge that human sin (soon displayed again in Noah's own drunkenness) has not been eradicated; so our only hope is not our own righteousness but God's determination to save.

God's remembering Noah in Genesis 8 reveals that divine remembrance is covenantal; God calls to mind his promise and acts to save; so that even in the darkest waiting, his people can trust that he will bring about a genuine new beginning, ultimately fulfilled in the new creation Jesus gives.

God's judgment against sin is inevitable and overwhelming, and yet he shows grace to those who will trust him; the flood account teaches that salvation comes not from human effort but from taking refuge in the one place God provides, foreshadowing salvation in Christ.

Genesis 6 shows that humanity's sin is perverted, deliberate, deep, and pervasive; so total that you are dead unless God intervenes; yet in the middle of announced judgment, God's unmerited grace finds Noah and precedes and produces his righteousness.

Genesis 5's genealogy, despite its lists of names and the relentless refrain 'and he died,' is showing that death reigns because of Adam's representative sin, yet the pattern's three breaks (Adam's creation, Enoch's translation, and Lamech's naming of Noah) reveal that God's purpose, promised destiny, and only hope for humanity are ultimately fulfilled in Christ, the true King who breaks death's grip forever.

God's people should return to him in repentance because he reigns supremely over all nations through his heavenly armies, because his gracious words to unfaithful Israel flow from his own unshakable jealous love rather than their merit, and because he will judge the wicked while saving those who trust him; ultimately fulfilled when Christ himself visited Jerusalem to rebuild God's true temple.

Displeasing and ill-favored circumstances reveal our dependency, but there is only one true hope; Jesus Christ himself; that will actually satisfy the soul, unlike the counterfeit hopes the world markets to us.

Genesis 4 shows that sin, once it takes hold of the human heart, never sits still; it grows and destroys, spreading from Cain's greedy, prideful offering to murder and then to escalating violence and corruption across generations, yet even in the midst of this spreading corruption God shows patient, reasoning mercy to sinners.

Even in the midst of the catastrophic curses God pronounces on the serpent, the woman, and the man after the Fall, he simultaneously plants seeds of grace and hope; most decisively in the promise of Genesis 3:15 that a coming offspring of the woman will crush the serpent, a promise ultimately fulfilled in Christ's death and resurrection.

Sin always looks good at first, but that's a lie; it leads to death and alienation, as Satan's subtle assault on God's word convinced Eve and Adam that God was stingy rather than generous, resulting in their rebellion and separation from God.

Human beings were created for a glorious purpose; to rule the cosmos under God in worship and obedience; through unique relationship with God, responsible obedience, and the covenant of marriage that helps fulfill that purpose; society's dissolution today comes from attacking these original creation structures.

Genesis 1 reveals God as the sovereign, good, speaking, redeeming Creator and King, and humanity as his image and likeness; made to be sons and servant-kings; so that worship of him and being what he intended us to be is our created purpose, a purpose we forfeited but which Jesus fulfills and restores to those who trust him.

The only answer for the unfaithfulness of God's people is repentance before a merciful God, as seen when Ezra confronts Israel's intermarriage with pagan nations and leads them to genuine, costly repentance rather than mere acknowledgment of sin.

Paul's final charge to Timothy; preach the word in season and out of season; is the church's abiding mandate, given all the more urgency because hard times of itching-ears false teaching are coming and Paul himself is facing imminent death.

Paul's confidence in ministry; even amid open doors, opposition, and painful transitions; rests not on his own adequacy but on the sufficiency God supplies to ministers of the new covenant, and that same sufficiency is available to ordinary believers who share the gospel.

By his sovereign grace, God chooses and prepares the most unlikely people; like Saul the persecutor; to accomplish his most wonderful and unstoppable plan, and this same grace saves unlikely people today.

Whether following Jesus produces visible success (the twelve sent out to heal and cast out demons) or apparent failure (John the Baptist's execution), following Christ is always worth it because it is its own reward, not measured by outcomes.

The one who delights in and meditates on God's word is the enduringly fruitful person, in contrast to the wicked who are like chaff blown away and will not stand in the final judgment.

Sometimes the more you know about Jesus, the less amazing he becomes; familiarity with Jesus is not the same thing as faith in Jesus, and can even become a hardened excuse for unbelief.

Whether you approach Jesus with bold confidence like Jairus or with tentative, hidden desperation like the bleeding woman, following Jesus always looks like desperate faith in him, not the strength of that faith but its object.

Believers, as citizens of God's kingdom, must obey God through the Spirit's empowering work, endure without grumbling by fixing hope on Christ's return, and even find joy in suffering as they pour out their lives for others' faith.

Because Christ, though fully God, humbled himself to the point of death on a cross and was then exalted, the church can only maintain unity by following his example of counting others more significant than themselves rather than clinging to selfish ambition and pride.

Living a life worthy of the gospel means the gospel makes us humble enough to prioritize others' needs over our own preferences, and it calls the church to stand firm together in the gospel amid opposition and suffering, trusting that God gives both the faith to believe and the suffering itself as gifts.

As Christians who have received the incomprehensible generosity of Christ's poverty for our sake, we should joyfully and sacrificially give beyond our means, fueled by thanksgiving, both financially and with our people, for the glory of God.

Through Christ's work as our new covenant mediator, Christians receive a new home (resurrection body), a new relationship (reconciliation and union with Christ), and a new role as Christ's ambassadors of reconciliation to the world.

In the midst of discouragement from evangelism, suffering, and the effects of aging, the Christian's confidence rests not in himself but in God; confidence in the gospel itself, in God's sustaining power at work in weak 'jars of clay,' and in the eternal weight of glory awaiting believers.

The Lord preserves the people he rescues, both through his word (giving them Ezra to teach it) and by his hand (his providential care in every detail of their journey), and he does the same for believers today.
