Psalm 5 traces David's movement from anguished prayer through confidence in God's holiness and steadfast love to a request for justice and a final note of refuge and joy, a gospel pattern of guilt, grace, and gratitude that is perfectly fulfilled and prayed by Christ, the truly righteous one, on our behalf.

1 Kings 18 presents three types of confidence; no confidence (Israel), false confidence (the prophets of Baal), and true confidence (Elijah); and shows that only confidence grounded in the faithful, covenant-keeping God, ultimately fulfilled in Christ's atoning death and resurrection, results in victory rather than destruction.

Proverbs 2 lays out God-given navigational requirements for the heart's path to the everlasting land, but human effort always fails (as Proverbs 30 confesses), so Christ alone walked that path perfectly, becoming the singular trailblazer whose obedience, wisdom, and cross-work secure our righteousness and place in the eternal land.

Jesus calms the storm on the Sea of Galilee to reveal that he cares for his people even when trials expose their weak faith, and that his way of saving; whether stilling a storm or dying on a cross; often looks foolish and far-fetched yet works completely.

From 1 Timothy 6:2b-5, Christians and pastors have three duties toward false teachers: exhort the church about them, expose their heterodox teaching that departs from the sound words of Christ, and evaluate them by their true character; conceit, quarrelsomeness, and using godliness for personal gain.

Congregations owe their elders; especially those who work hard at preaching and teaching; double honor, meaning both high esteem and fair financial pay, because the church exists as the household of God and pillar of the truth about Jesus.

Self-made attempts to escape God's rule and authority never work because God's fingerprints are on all creation; true and lasting refuge is found not by fleeing from Jesus but by taking refuge in him, since he alone absorbed the wrath we deserved on the cross.

Continuing his series on 1 Timothy 4:6-5:2, the pastor argues that faithful pastoral ministry (and Christian living generally) is not built on cultural strategies or numerical success but on unwavering devotion to Scripture, personal godliness, and rightly ordered treatment of others in the church; all flowing from gratitude for grace rather than legalistic performance.

A faithful pastor is marked, first, by warning the church against false teaching that adds anything to Christ's finished work for salvation, and second, by being constantly nourished on gospel truth himself so that he can rightly discern and reject such error.

1 Timothy 2:8-15 gives the church God's design for men and women in corporate worship; men praying with holy, godly hearts and women adorned with good works rather than externals, and women not teaching or exercising authority over men in the church; and this instruction is grounded not in first-century culture but in creation and the fall, so the church must not compromise it under cultural pressure.

The church at Ephesus; and every church; has been entrusted with a gospel stewardship: to guard the gospel against false teaching, promote true love, rightly relate law to gospel, remember the gospel is for sinners, prioritize God's glory, and distinguish authentic from inauthentic ministry.

Jesus contrasts little children with the rich young ruler to teach that entrance into the kingdom of God comes only through humble, helpless, faith-filled reception as a gift of sovereign grace, never through moral achievement or self-sufficiency.

Psalm 56 shows David afraid and under threat from Saul and the Philistines, and from his fear-filled lament we can trace five hope-filled responses for the fearful or troubled Christian: pray, trust God, expect suffering, know that God is for you, and be thankful, all of which are ultimately grounded in and modeled by Christ.

Understanding the biblical concept of 'righteousness' as a legal term; God's perfect law that no one can keep; is the key that unlocks the whole Bible, and only by first seeing that God's righteous standard is unattainable will a person see their need for Christ, who provides righteousness by faith.

Because believers hold a dual citizenship; earthly and heavenly; Paul calls the Philippians to conduct their lives worthy of the gospel, standing united in a spiritual fight against opposition, in which suffering for Christ's sake is itself a gift that marks genuine belonging to him.

The heroes named in Hebrews 11 are not commended because of their own moral faithfulness; many were flawed, sinful people; but because they trusted in God's provision, ultimately pointing forward to Christ; believers today are likewise saved and sustained not by their own faithfulness but by faith in the faithful Jesus.

Hebrews 2 urges Christians to keep their focused attention riveted on Jesus because he alone, as both truly divine and truly human, secures the great salvation no one else can offer; he is the captain of our salvation who took on flesh to defeat death and the devil on our behalf.

Jonah's anger at God's mercy toward Nineveh exposes the madness of questioning God's sovereign freedom to extend grace to whomever he wills; believers must learn to submit to God's sovereignty rather than sit in judgment over it.

Salvation belongs to the Lord alone; he sovereignly grants it as he wills, illustrated by Jonah's reluctant journey from resisting God's sovereignty to embracing it, and by Nineveh's unexpected repentance; yet God ordains that this sovereign salvation comes through the preaching of the gospel to all people, even our enemies.

Isaiah 11's prophecy of a shoot and root from the stump of Jesse points to Jesus Christ, who brings glorious hope out of Israel's judgment, defeats the curse of sin, and draws all nations to himself in a kingdom that is present now and will be consummated at his return.

Jonah 1 is structured around eight ironies dealing with sin and salvation, chief among them that a prophet flees the God he serves and desires the death of his enemies rather than their salvation, ultimately pointing forward to Jesus, the greater Jonah, who brings deliverance through his own death for both Jew and Gentile.

The book of Jonah introduces a real historical prophet who resists God's call to preach mercy to Israel's enemies, revealing both the sovereignty of God over all creation and salvation, and God's long-standing evangelistic plan (rooted in the Abrahamic covenant) to save all peoples; ultimately pointing forward to Jesus, the greater Jonah.

The gospel is not just for unbelievers to get saved but is the ongoing means by which believers are strengthened and matured, as seen in Paul's own stated purpose for writing Romans to Christians already in Rome.

Ephesians 4 functions as a 'gratitude' law text: because Christians have already received the free grace of the gospel laid out in Ephesians 1-3, they are now called to walk worthy through humility, unity, and love, growing to maturity as they deepen in the true knowledge of the Son of God.

Salvation is entirely God's sovereign work; regeneration precedes and produces faith, so grace is not merely unmerited but demerited favor toward those who were spiritually dead, leaving no room for boasting and grounding good works as the necessary fruit rather than the cause of new life.

Because believers are already declared perfect in Christ (positional righteousness) yet not yet experientially perfected (glorification still future), that already-not-yet reality should fuel active pursuit of godliness out of gratitude, not passivity or license to sin.

Because of God's eternal decree, believers are already, in the present, the 'new creation' that Scripture promises will be consummated at Christ's return, and this Spirit-wrought reality should reshape how Christians see and treat one another now.

Paul's warning against the 'dogs' who add works to faith in Philippians 3 teaches the church to identify and reject any gospel that mixes Christ's finished work with human effort, since true righteousness comes only through faith in Christ, not law-keeping.

Jesus in Luke 4 identifies himself as the promised Messiah of Isaiah 61 who brings spiritual liberation from sin, yet the very people who most eagerly received him as a gifted teacher violently reject him once he presses their hearts, showing that the Christ people actually need is not the Christ they want.

Habakkuk's questions about God's use of the wicked Babylonians to judge Israel are answered not with an explanation but with a call to trust God's revealed word; 'the righteous shall live by faith'; a faith that both saves and sustains through every circumstance, including devastating loss.

In Luke 7:36-50, Jesus shows that those who have been forgiven a great debt of sin respond with great love, while those who think they don't need much forgiveness (like Simon the Pharisee) show little love; the amount of love displayed reveals whether a person has truly grasped the depth of their forgiveness.

In Exodus 17, the Israelites put God on trial for testing them, and God's astonishing response was to have the rock struck instead of the people; a picture of Christ, the substitutionary rock, taking the judgment his people deserved so that living water (salvation) might flow to them freely.

Because Jesus is both the church's Savior and its supreme example of humility; emptying himself, taking on humanity, and becoming obedient to death on a cross; the congregation is called to single-minded unity and humility in promoting and protecting the gospel, trusting that just as his humiliation led to exaltation, their present cost of discipleship will one day be vindicated.

Philippians 2:1-11 grounds the church's mission of promoting and protecting the gospel in two realities about Jesus: he is the Savior whose gospel benefits call for unified, humble living, and he is the perfect example of self-emptying humility that Christians follow (not to earn salvation, but because he already secured it).

The local church exists for one primary reason above all others: to protect and promote the gospel of Jesus Christ, standing firm together against those who would add works to faith, following Paul's example of gospel-centered confidence in life and death.

The mission of a local church is not primarily unity or a good attitude but the promotion and protection of the gospel, and Paul's unshakable confidence in his ultimate salvation is what fuels the boldness needed to live and die for that mission.

Paul models gospel-mindedness for the church in two ways; through a mature prayer for growth in love, knowledge, and discernment, and through his own example of rejoicing that his imprisonment has advanced the gospel; so that believers avoid the drift of assuming, forgetting, and eventually denying the gospel.

The mission of the church; modeled in Philippians; is to promote and protect the gospel above all else, and this gospel truth (that God who began a good work in believers will complete it) should shape how Christians view and partner with one another despite imperfection.

Isaiah 53 is the Old Testament parallel to Philippians 2, revealing Jesus as the unexpected, suffering servant who substitutionarily bears his people's sin and covenant curse, and who; because of his loyal obedience; is rewarded, exalted, and now intercedes for all who trust in him.

Loving one's enemies as commanded in Romans 12:14-21 is an impossible, kingdom-ethic love that only believers who have been rescued from the curse of the law by Christ's own accursed death can practice, and doing so displays the gospel to a watching world.

In this opening sermon of a new series, Abendroth argues that Philippians is saturated with life-changing theological truths; about who God is, the gospel, the church's gospel-centered mission, Christ's return, and God's sovereign perseverance with his people; meant to motivate believers and Omaha Bible Church to love God more and be transformed together.

Micah's pattern of judgment followed by grace culminates in the promised Messiah from Bethlehem, whose reign secures God's people so completely that he himself is their peace, no matter how dark their present circumstances appear.

Hebrews 1 gives seven reasons Jesus is better than anyone or anything, and seven Old Testament proofs that he is even superior to angels, so believers must keep looking to and trusting in him alone rather than drifting back to lesser things.

Hebrews 1:1-4 argues that Jesus is better than everything else because he is the Son and ultimate revelation of God, the heir of all things, the creator of the world, and God himself in the flesh, so believers under pressure should never look back to what came before him.

Christ is supreme over all creation, has fully accomplished reconciliation through his cross, and believers who trust him already possess complete standing before God; so they must not shift their hope to any other source of security, whether human achievement or self-effort.

Mark 14 reveals that Jesus' suffering and death as the ultimate Passover lamb unfold entirely according to God's sovereign plan, not chance, and this sovereign substitutionary love for his people is the foundation for our own love toward God and others.

Matthew 2 shows that Jesus is the ultimate, greater Son; greater than David, Israel, and Moses; by fulfilling the pattern of Bethlehem (Micah 5:2) and the exodus from Egypt (Hosea 11:1), teaching us to read the whole Old Testament as pointing forward to him.

Jesus is named 'God saves' because, as the ultimate and greater Joshua, he actually and successfully accomplishes what the old covenant Joshua could not; leading his people, both Jew and Gentile, into the true promised land by saving them from their sins through his perfect obedience and atoning death.

Jesus is both David's son (fully human, in the promised royal line) and David's Lord (the eternal Son of God), and this incarnational mystery, along with his perfect fulfillment of the greatest commandment, shows that every kind of person; religious leader or humble widow; needs him as the one Savior who meets God's requirements.

Throughout Mark 12, Jesus is repeatedly questioned by hostile religious factions, and in every case he turns their trap into an occasion to reveal that he himself is the rejected cornerstone; the true temple and object of saving faith; whom Israel's leaders reject even as he fulfills Scripture's whole storyline.

The transfiguration of Jesus; flanked by Moses and Elijah then leaving 'Jesus only'; shows that all of redemptive history was pointing to Christ as the ultimate fulfillment, so believers must now listen to him alone and imitate his pattern of serving rather than being served.

Through the transfiguration, the healing of the demon-possessed boy, and his call to servant-hearted greatness, Jesus reveals himself as the uniquely worthy beloved Son and Messiah who alone deserves total trust, even when that trust is weak and imperfect.

Psalm 119 is not primarily a moral checklist for believers to strive after in their own strength, but a psalm that reveals God's righteous character through his law, is prophetically spoken by Christ who perfectly fulfilled that law on our behalf, and only then becomes a lamp we can love and follow by grace through union with him.

Romans 1–6 teaches three facts about God's law: everyone, Jew or Gentile, is under God's law and guilty of breaking it; no descendant of Adam can keep it, so everyone must trust the one true law-keeper, Jesus Christ, whose righteousness is credited by faith; and Christians, though freed from the law as a means of justification, are still obligated to obey God's law out of gratitude and union with Christ, not to earn salvation.

Peter addresses Christians as 'elect exiles' to remind them that though life in this broken world (our 'Babylon') is difficult and we don't fully belong, our unshakeable identity as chosen by the triune God is what sustains joy and rejoicing amid trials.

Isaiah 34 and 35 present two contrasting eternal destinies; the terror of judgment and hell for those who reject God, and the glorious, certain hope of heaven for the redeemed in Christ; and our destiny is determined now by our relationship to Jesus Christ.

Jesus's three demonstrations of authority in Mark 5; over demons, disease, and death; are historical proofs that ground the Christian's confidence that the future promises of Revelation 21 (no more death, crying, or pain) will actually come to pass.

When suffering strips life empty, as it did for Naomi, the answer is not bitterness but trust in God's sovereign, providential, and faithful working of all things toward hope, ultimately fulfilled in Christ.

Because of the Father's lavish, unreluctant love for us in Jesus, Christians are not merely permitted but commanded to celebrate and be glad, whether we identify with the guilty younger son or the self-righteous older son.

When facing scary, destabilizing circumstances; personal, relational, or national; God's people are called to fear the Lord alone rather than seeking security in the world's counsel, because God has promised a coming child-king, the Prince of Peace, whose zealous, unending reign is the true ground of hope.

Working through Mark 3, the sermon argues that Jesus repeatedly and publicly proved his messianic identity through miracles, authority over demons, and sovereign calling of the twelve, so that responding to him with anything other than trust; as the Pharisees and even Jesus' own family did; is 'spiritual insanity.'

Through four controversies in Mark 2, Jesus repeatedly authenticates his unique identity as the divine Messiah; forgiving sins, calling sinners, dismissing man-made fasting rules, and claiming lordship over the Sabbath; exposing how the Pharisees' traditions had blinded them to their need for him as Savior and true Sabbath rest.

Through three of the four questions posed to him in Mark 2, Jesus demonstrates that he is the divine Son of Man and promised Messiah: he has authority to forgive sins, he calls and eats with sinners rather than the self-righteous, and he cannot be patched onto the dead legalistic traditions of the Pharisees.

Mark 1:1-15 presents Jesus as the true and better Adam; the messianic king promised through Isaiah, David, and the prophets; who is baptized, tested, and proclaims the kingdom not so believers can imitate him, but so they will trust him as their federal representative before God.

Jesus's baptism by John, though seemingly nonsensical since he had no sin to repent of, reveals that he fulfilled all righteousness as the representative and last Adam who perfectly obeyed God's law in the place of his people, giving believers both atonement and positive righteousness.

Mark opens his gospel account by loading the very first verse with titles; Jesus (God saves), Christ (the long-awaited anointed prophet-priest-king), and Son of God (both eternal deity and the true, faithful Son that Israel and Adam failed to be); so that grasping these titles unlocks the whole book, and John the Baptist's ministry of water baptism only foreshadows the greater Spirit-baptism only the divine Jesus can give.

Assurance of salvation is not based on the believer's performance or spiritual maturity but is grounded entirely in being united to Christ, so that the future verdict of no condemnation is already true now for every Christian from the moment of faith.

Deuteronomy 4 reveals three unique actions that set the true God apart from all idols; he speaks, he specifies how he is to be worshiped, and he saves through judgment and election for his own glory; all of which finds its climax and fulfillment in the person and work of Jesus Christ.

Isaiah 61-62 reveals the mission of the anointed Servant; identified by Jesus himself in the Nazareth synagogue as his own; showing that Christ's redemptive work of favor and judgment, begun at his first coming, will not be fully consummated for Israel and the nations until his second coming, in the new Jerusalem.

Bitterness is an endoparasitic sin that feeds on our legitimate sense of justice to justify vengeful, self-righteous acts, and Hebrews 12 shows that the only weapon strong enough to dislodge it is the grace of God displayed in Christ's saving work, his fatherly discipline, and the unshakable kingdom believers already possess.
