God is self-sufficient, possessing every quality intrinsically, eternally, and in infinite measure, so that he needs nothing from his creation or from us, yet in love he freely gives himself to fill needy creatures who can add nothing to him.

The greatest gift God has ever given is his own Son, and John 3:16-21 shows that this gift, motivated by God's love for the whole world and pictured in the bronze serpent, is either received by faith or rejected because people love their sin and refuse to come to the light.

Jesus redefines greatness not as self-distinction but as sacrificial service, modeled first in his own suffering and death, and calls his disciples to that same servanthood, especially toward those who are weak and vulnerable.

Genuine faith, even in true believers, is always imperfect and mixed with unbelief, so our confidence must rest not in the strength or perfection of our own faith but in the perfection and power of Jesus Christ, expressed through dependent prayer.

Human tradition becomes sinful and offensive to God when it produces false judgment of others, hypocrisy that masks the heart's true state, or disobedience to God's explicit commands; so believers must rigorously distinguish their own traditions from the binding authority of Scripture itself.

In the feeding of the 5,000, Jesus reveals himself as the shepherd king who knows our limits and invites us to rest, moves toward us with compassion in our need, calls us to serve beyond our own resources, and then provides abundantly through that faithful, dependent service.

Herod's fearful fascination with John's preaching without repentance shows that no one can straddle the fence between love for the world and love for God; John's faithful endurance unto death, even under an unjust and violent world, is vindicated as true triumph because God remains sovereign over even the worst injustices done to his people.

The familiarity and humility of Jesus; his ordinary hometown upbringing and common trade; became stumbling blocks that kept the people of Nazareth from recognizing his true authority, and Christ's disciples are sent out to proclaim the gospel in that same pattern of humble dependence and derived authority.

When human hope is completely exhausted; through chronic sickness or even death; Jesus displays himself as the one with power to save, and these healing miracles point beyond themselves to the greater promise of resurrection and eternal life for all who trust him.

Jesus displays the same divine authority over demons that he showed over the storm and disease, and only those who trust him for forgiveness; rather than fearing and rejecting him; are freed from Satan's grip and restored to true life.

Jesus is both the perfect man, who in weakness and dependence trusted his Father even to sleep in a storm, and the sovereign God who commands wind and sea, and this dual identity is why he alone is worthy of our trust in every storm of life, up to and including the final storm of God's judgment.

When Jesus announces that God's kingdom has arrived, he lays out a fourfold job description for those who would belong to it: repent of sin, believe the gospel, follow Jesus above every other allegiance, and become fishers of men who call others into the kingdom.

In light of the nearness of the end of all things, Peter calls the church; not as consumers but as a family of elect exiles; to live prayerfully, love constantly (a love that covers a multitude of sins), and serve graciously with the gifts God has given, all by God's grace and for God's glory.

In the fullness of time God sent his Son; fully human yet sinless; to redeem those enslaved under the law so that we might be adopted as sons and daughters with full inheritance rights in God's family.

In Joshua 13–21, the distribution of Canaan teaches that Israel's true inheritance was never ultimately the land itself but God himself, and this truth calls believers to a humble confidence of faith, a priority on gathered worship, and a reflection of God's justice as they wait for their own eternal inheritance in Christ.

In Joshua 8, God gives Israel a new beginning after their sin at Ai; through clear direction, generous provision, and the warning of judgment; showing that though a holy God cannot ignore sin, he graciously restores repentant covenant people, a pattern fully resolved only in Christ who bore the curse of the law on the tree.

The crossing of the Jordan reveals three enduring realities God wants his people confident in: his presence with them (now fulfilled in the indwelling Holy Spirit), his power displayed precisely in their helplessness, and his call to build memorials so future generations remember his deeds and keep trusting him.

Rahab, an unlikely Canaanite prostitute, becomes a model of genuine saving faith; faith grounded in true knowledge of God, expressed in personal trust and refuge-seeking, and proven by obedient action; showing that no one is beyond the reach of God's surprising grace.

The Christian life, like Israel's conquest of Canaan, requires genuine strength and courage; not because the inheritance must be earned, but because God calls his people to fight real spiritual battles trusting in his promises and presence, with that courage always directed toward obedience to his word.

The book of Joshua is fundamentally about God's gracious gift of a homeland to his people, a promise that points beyond the physical land of Canaan to a greater eternal homeland secured by Jesus, the greater Joshua, who succeeds where Moses and Joshua fell short.

God, having the ultimate vantage point over history and time, is trustworthy about the coming day of judgment and renewal, whereas scoffers who judge reality only by their limited daily experience wrongly deny it; therefore believers should live in holiness while waiting for and hastening that day.

False teaching always leads to destruction because it ultimately denies Christ and his gospel, appeals broadly because it serves sinful desire, and Peter's historical examples; fallen angels, the flood, and Sodom; prove that God will certainly rescue the godly and judge the unrighteous.

False teaching is identifiable by four marks; it leads to destruction, denies Christ, attracts many, and serves sinful desire; but God's pattern throughout history proves he will certainly rescue the godly from trials while keeping the unrighteous under judgment until the last day.

Peter grounds the certainty of Christ's second coming in his own eyewitness experience of the Transfiguration, and because that same glory will one day be fully revealed, believers must give full attention to the inspired, prophetic Scriptures as a reliable light until that day dawns.

Believers confirm (not create) their calling and election by diligently pursuing Christ-like character; faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, steadfastness, godliness, brotherly affection, and love; motivated by gratitude for grace already given rather than fear of judgment.

Unlike human promises, which fail because we are sinful and finite, God's promises are unbreakable, and it is through knowing God and meditating on his precious and great promises; fulfilled in Christ; that believers grow in grace, become partakers of the divine nature, and are purified by hope for Christ's return.

Being a child of God is defined by three inseparable realities from Romans 8:12-17: being led by the Spirit to put sin to death, being adopted by the Father into intimate relationship, and being a co-heir with Christ who will share in his glory through suffering.

Jesus Christ's true humanity, as shown in Hebrews 2, reveals both his unique glory as the sinless God-man and the destiny God intends for believers who are united with him: to rule creation, share his holiness, and one day possess glorified physical bodies.

God designed human emotions; both positive and negative; not as obstacles to faith but as a gauge that displays how deeply a person values Jesus; Jesus himself modeled this by tending to his disciples' emotions as he prepared them for his death and resurrection.

Both marriage and singleness are genuine God-given gifts rooted in creation and affirmed by Jesus and Paul, each carrying real blessings and real trials, but neither is ultimate; both must find their meaning, contentment, and hope in Christ himself and in belonging to the eternal family of the church.

Grounded in Genesis 1-2, the sermon argues that men and women equally bear the image of God and equally share in the grace of Christ, yet God designed them with distinct, complementary roles; men uniquely responsible to lead, provide, and protect, and women uniquely responsible to respect, encourage, and follow that leadership; roles that were distorted but not erased by the fall.

On Palm Sunday Jesus deliberately revealed himself as a king unlike what people wanted or expected; humble, holy, healing, and hallowed as God himself; and calls us to submit to him as he actually is rather than reshaping him into the king we wish he were.

Because Scripture presents human beings as an integrated unity of body and soul, the mercies of God in Christ call believers to offer their whole selves; including everyday bodily acts like eating, sexuality, and hospitality; as reasonable, living worship, not merely an inward spiritual devotion detached from the body.

Preaching straight through Romans 1:18-32, Kimbell argues that fallen humanity is marked by five realities: we suppress the truth about God revealed in creation, we exalt created things in God's place (idolatry), our hearts and minds become corrupt as a result, we stand under God's righteous wrath, and yet we are freely offered his righteous salvation in Christ.

Humanity alone among all creation is made in the image and likeness of God, which means people are made to resemble God, to represent Him as His stewards on earth, to be treated with unique respect and dignity, and to bear unique moral responsibility before Him; a truth fulfilled and renewed only in Christ.

Because we are God's creatures and not merely sinners, we are fundamentally dependent on him for life, for purpose, and for truth; and Paul's sermon at the Areopagus in Acts 17 lays this creator-creature distinction as the foundation for a whole theology of humanity.

The Holy Spirit is essential at every stage of the process by which God's truth comes to us; revelation, inspiration, proclamation, and illumination; so believers must approach Scripture in humble dependence on the Spirit rather than trusting human wisdom or insight.

John closes his letter by identifying the puzzling exhortation to 'keep yourselves from idols' as the central question of the whole epistle: since Jesus alone is the true God and eternal life who protects believers from sin and Satan and grants true knowledge of God, nothing else; money, entertainment, romantic love, or any good thing; may be allowed to claim the heart's ultimate trust and worship.

John writes 1 John so that believers who trust in Christ may have settled confidence; not presumption; that they possess eternal life, that God hears their prayers offered according to his will, and that he answers their prayers for struggling fellow believers.

God's own testimony concerning his Son; given through Jesus' Spirit-empowered ministry (water) and atoning death (blood); is the one essential, sufficient witness a person must believe, and whoever receives that testimony and has the Son possesses eternal life now, while whoever rejects it remains dead and effectively calls God a liar.

John's summary of the tests of life; faith, love, and obedience; shows that genuine new birth in God always produces all three together as a package deal, but underneath all of them stands faith in Christ alone as the ground of the believer's certain victory over the world.

Genuine Christian faithfulness expressed through walking in the truth of the gospel naturally overflows into sacrificially sending and supporting missionaries who go out for the sake of Christ's name, and in doing so believers become fellow workers for the truth.

Because Scripture is nothing less than the very word of the Lord; trustworthy, life-giving, and ultimately fulfilled in the incarnate Word, Jesus Christ; the church should resolve to be shaped by God's word rather than by the competing voices of culture, especially as a new year begins.

John's four marks of assurance; the Holy Spirit's presence, confessing Jesus as Son of God and Savior, believing God's love in Christ, and loving fellow believers; provide the confident foundation to face an unknown future (specifically 2021) without fear.

The final word of the gospel is not the incarnation, cross, or resurrection but Christ's promised second coming, and hoping rightly in that return; not in anything this world offers; produces present purification and assurance while also warning the unbelieving of coming judgment.

Isaiah's Servant Song reveals the astonishing drama of the gospel: the exalted divine servant would suffer humiliation and death not as accident but as substitution, bearing the sin of many so that sinners could be counted righteous and share in his satisfaction.

God delights in establishing justice through his chosen servant, Jesus Christ, who brings justice not by destroying the unrighteous but by restoring and making them righteous through his own righteousness.

Preaching Isaiah 9:1-7 on the first Sunday of Advent, Dykes argues that God's deliverance of his oppressed, undeserving people comes not through a mighty warrior but through the utterly unexpected gift of a child who is himself Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace, and whose kingdom of justice and peace will never end.

John gives believers three concrete tests to discern whether a spirit at work in a person's life is the Spirit of God or a counterfeit spirit: it glorifies Christ as the God-man come in the flesh, it overcomes the world's deception, and it honors the apostolic testimony now recorded in Scripture.

When our hearts condemn us for failing to love as Christ commanded, the ground for reassurance is not our own performance but the fact that God; who knows everything, including sins we don't even see; has promised mercy and acceptance in Christ, and this settled confidence frees believers to draw near to him in prayer.

John calls the church to love one another not merely in word but in deed and truth, a self-sacrificial love patterned on Christ's own sacrifice, which distinguishes believers from the world and serves as evidence that they have truly passed from death into eternal life.

Being a Christian necessarily produces a life of practiced righteousness; not because obedience creates Christian identity, but because that identity (being born of God, having seen Christ's glory, and having been freed by Christ from sin's dominion) inevitably gives rise to holy living.

John gives assurance of salvation not through mystical experience but through the simple, verifiable evidence of personal obedience to Christ's commands, because genuine union with and knowledge of Christ inevitably produces a transformed, obedient life.

Before John speaks of God's love or mercy, he grounds fellowship with God in God's absolute holiness, and only by seeing God rightly in that holiness can we see ourselves rightly and understand that fellowship with him comes through walking in the light and continually confessing our sin, trusting the finished work of Christ.

Lamentations 5 models three cries God's suffering people should make to him; remember, you reign, restore; and reveals that the deepest longing in suffering should not be for relief or restored circumstances but for restored relationship with God himself.

The destruction of Jerusalem exposes four false hopes; religious practice, material wealth, physical beauty, and earthly security; that the human heart clings to instead of God, and God's judgment mercifully strips these away so that true, lasting hope is found only in Christ.

God's providence extends over both the good and the bad in life; nothing happens apart from his command; and rather than being a terrifying truth, this is meant to comfort those who trust him, alongside his commitment to justice and his offer of redemption for those who repent.

Jeremiah models how a sufferer should respond to devastating, unchanged circumstances: by calling on God and himself to remember God's unending, ever-new mercy, and by waiting patiently, trusting that suffering will not last forever and that God does not afflict from his heart.

The fierce, historical anger of God against Jerusalem in Lamentations 2 reveals five characteristics of divine anger; personal, powerful, pure, patient, and painful; which together warn sinners today and point forward to the cross, where Jesus bore that same anger in the place of repentant sinners.

Even when the circumstances of life offer no hope, hope can still be found in the Lord himself, because the same God who justly judges sin is also compassionate and merciful toward those who confess their sin and cry out to him.

Psalm 130 teaches that when believers feel spiritually distant from God, the proper response is to cry out, wait, and hope in the Lord, because he is gracious, has spoken his word of promise (the gospel), and is faithful to keep it.

Psalm 127 teaches that God is sovereignly and graciously at work in the most ordinary realities of life; productivity, protection, sleep, and children; so that these common experiences should drive us to dependent trust rather than anxious self-reliance, ultimately pointing to Jesus as the true builder of our eternal house.

In Psalm 103 David shows that God's compassion for his people is not caused by their worthiness but by his own unchanging character, and it so infinitely exceeds anything we could give back to him that the only right response is remembering, worshiping, and extending that same undeserved compassion to others.

Psalm 100 calls all creation to worship God with joyful thanksgiving, and calls his covenant people especially to give thanks with their whole being because God's steadfast love and faithfulness; not our circumstances; are the true and objective basis for our gratitude.

In the middle of pandemic, economic collapse, and social unrest, Moses' prayer in Psalm 90 teaches that God's people are never truly homeless because God himself has always been their dwelling place, that human beings are helpless before both mortality and God's righteous wrath against sin, and yet there is hope because God graciously teaches us to number our days and satisfies us with a steadfast love ultimately secured through Christ's bearing of that wrath on the cross.

Psalm 1 presents two ways to live; the wicked drift from listening to standing to sitting with sinners and end up weightless and judged, while the righteous delight in and meditate on God's word, are rooted like trees by streams of water, and are stable even in suffering because they take refuge in Christ.

Acts 28's conclusion shows that the gospel remains unhindered by any circumstance; not Jewish rejection, not Roman imprisonment, not even a modern pandemic; because God himself is advancing it through Christ's proclaimed lordship, and the church today continues that same unstoppable mission.

In Acts 27-28, God repeatedly brings Paul to a place of utter helplessness before delivering him, so that Paul (and we) would depend not on our own strength but on God's specific promises, trusting that God always keeps his word even when the details and timing remain unknown.

Paul's trial before Festus and Agrippa in Acts 25-26 models what it looks like for Christians to live 'in the world but not of it,' especially in three areas: submitting to legitimate government authority, enduring worldly persecution without despair, and remaining faithful to the mission of gospel witness.

In his defense before Felix, Paul boldly contends for the exclusive claim of the gospel (Christ as the only way), the universal claim of the gospel (all will be raised to judgment, just and unjust), and the necessity of righteousness and self-control; not as the basis of salvation, but as the fruit and testimony of genuine faith in view of the coming judgment.

Genuine hope for the Christian is not found in maintaining a religious appearance (which is exposed as false in trials) but in the future hope of bodily resurrection and the present hope that Christ sovereignly reigns over every detail of our chaotic circumstances.

Paul's freedom, confidence, and wisdom in defending his ministry before hostile Jews in Jerusalem look radically different from worldly versions of those same qualities because they are entirely reshaped and driven by the gospel of Christ.

On Easter Sunday amid the pandemic's exposure of human fragility, Paul's words in Romans 8:1-11 reveal four unshakable promises for those united to Christ by faith: a new status of no condemnation, a new obedience by the Spirit, a new nature freed from the flesh, and a new future of bodily resurrection.

Paul's determination to go to Jerusalem despite prophesied suffering was a deliberate imitation of Christ's own resolve to journey to Jerusalem and suffer, and this pattern of Christ-imitating suffering is the calling of every Christian today, giving meaning and purpose even to ordinary daily sufferings.

Paul's farewell charge to the Ephesian elders in Acts 20 lays out four marks of godly leadership; submission to Christ, faithful teaching of the whole counsel of God, watchful oversight of the flock, and sacrificial service; patterns that apply to pastors and to every believer's sphere of influence, and are especially needed amid the uncertainty of the coronavirus crisis.

Paul's ministry in Acts 20 models a five-fold ministry of encouragement; words, unity, gathering, comfort, and wisdom; that the church, isolated and afraid during the COVID-19 outbreak, needs to practice toward one another.

God's mission to exalt himself through the church is carried out precisely through personal weakness and suffering, not despite it, so that his power and hope are displayed to a fearful world; illustrated in real time by the church's response to the coronavirus pandemic and the postponement of its building campaign.
