First, We Ask 'Why?' Then We Ask 'Why Not?'

Preaching from Jesus's exchange with the Sadducees over levirate marriage, the sermon argues that faithful engagement with any tradition or law requires two steps: first asking 'why' to understand the compassion or fear that produced it, and then refusing to stop there; asking 'why not' a more just world where the marginalized (women, immigrants, children, the economically excluded) are heard, valued, and freed from structures that once seemed necessary but were never right.
