David's covenant kindness to Mephibosheth; a crippled enemy heir given a permanent seat at the king's table; is a shadow of the gospel, in which God, bound by his eternal covenant, shows steadfast love (hesed) to spiritually crippled rebels, not merely providing for them but welcoming them to belong forever.
