The Paradox Church

The Great Commission is not merely a burden or duty added onto the Christian life but an invitation to participate in who God actually is; sovereign, seeking/redeeming, and faithfully present; so believers are called to faithfulness in gospel witness rather than success or impressiveness.

Israel's crisis at Rephidim shows that trials expose our entitlement and forgetfulness toward God, but God answers our accusations against him not with judgment but with mercy, ultimately foreshadowed in Christ standing on the rock and being struck in our place so that God's faithfulness is proven regardless of our circumstances.

Drawing from Ecclesiastes 7:8, the sermon argues that endings; the close of a year, of a life, and of history itself; are better than beginnings because they reveal what promise could only anticipate, and that this hope calls believers to patient, humble trust in God's timing rather than proud self-determination.

Salvation is a fourfold work entirely accomplished by God; we are saved from God's wrath, by God's grace through Christ's substitution as the second Adam, to union with God, and for the display of God's own glory; so that no human contribution or boasting is possible.

The Transfiguration gives the disciples; and us; a glimpse of Jesus' true glory that both confirms him as the fulfillment of the Law and Prophets and points beyond Good Friday and Easter to the believer's ultimate glorification in eternity.

When life gets hard and doubt or opposition presses in, believers need tangible 'Ebenezer' markers; especially baptism and the Lord's Supper; to grab hold of and remember God's faithfulness and Christ's finished work, and today's service calls everyone to respond to that gospel in some tangible way.

The resurrection of Jesus is not a symbol or a helpful philosophy but a historic, evidenced fact of first importance, and only by treating it as literally true can believers move from feeling stuck to walking in actual power and victory rather than mere religious self-improvement.

Baptism and the Lord's Supper are tangible gifts of grace that God gave the church so that spiritual realities become physical and touchable, countering a false sacred-secular divide and reminding believers weekly of their union with Christ and reconciliation with one another.

Family discipleship happens not by adopting a parenting formula but by combining intentional, seasonal rhythms with treating everyday moments as discipleship opportunities that aim at children's hearts, pointing them again and again to Jesus rather than to their own or their parents' performance.

The 'secret place of thunder'; the regular, private practice of meeting with God in prayer and silence, following the pattern of Israel at Sinai and of Jesus himself; is the one antidote to the wilderness of self-discovery and self-reliance that defines our age; you find yourself not by looking within but by regularly meeting with God.

God shapes his people not through big, dramatic moments but through small, faithful steps of obedience taken in hard and uncertain times, and it is these small acts; like Israel's small-yet-faithful work rebuilding the temple in Zechariah; that a big God uses for big kingdom purposes.

When the disconnect between what we know about God and what we feel overwhelms us, the path through the 'dark night of the soul' is not to stay fixed on our own despair but to preach the gospel to ourselves, fix our eyes on Christ, and hope in him even while still in the valley.
