The work of God; illustrated by the rebuilding of the temple in Ezra 3–6; is never finished, always opposed by the flesh, the world, and Satan, and yet ultimately triumphant because of Christ's finished work, so believers should expect ongoing, opposed, but victorious labor in the kingdom.

Drawing from his own recent double tendon rupture and his wife Julie's recurring cancer, Bob Kauflin preaches that Christians endure suffering with courage by fixing their eyes on unseen eternal realities, resting in a confident hope of resurrection, and making it their supreme aim to please the Lord right where they are, not waiting until circumstances improve.

When we submit ourselves to God's wisdom; accepting that we only see a sliver of his grand story; we are freed to enjoy God's ordinary gifts (eating, drinking, toil, relationships) as expressions of his favor, while recognizing that Jesus himself is the greater joy those gifts point toward.

Psalm 150, as the closing doxology of the entire Psalter, teaches that wherever you are and whatever God has given you, you always have reason to praise the Lord; because the place, reason, and manner of praise have all been secured for us through Christ's atoning work.

The grace of God that saves us is the same grace that actively trains and disciplines us toward godliness, and this training will only end when Christ returns; so grace and godliness can never be separated in the Christian life.

The empty tomb and Mary Magdalene's encounter with the risen Jesus reveal two truths: Christ has conquered death, and his resurrection assures believers of God's steadfast love, seen in his calling weak, failing disciples 'my brothers.'

Life presents a binary fork: trusting in man leaves you a barren shrub in the desert, while trusting the Lord makes you like a tree planted by water that stays fruitful and unafraid even in drought and hard times; and trusting the Lord is actually harder than merely obeying him.

Because Jesus is a priest sworn in by God, who never dies, and who is utterly unstained by sin, he alone can save his people to the uttermost and secure their standing before God apart from any wavering certainty on their part.

Jesus' compassion for the harassed and helpless crowds is the motive for the church's mission, and prayer to the Lord of the harvest for laborers is the method; prayer that the disciples themselves became the answer to.

In sending out the Twelve and feeding the five thousand, Jesus reveals that he provides everything his people need for gospel mission; power, practical provision, protection, and purpose; so that we can go trusting him rather than our own resources.

Paul teaches the Corinthians that Christian affliction is a surprising doorway into greater grace: God comforts the afflicted so they can comfort others, and he brings believers to the end of their self-reliance so they learn to depend wholly on the God who raises the dead.

The Lord's Prayer given in Matthew 6:9-15 is the pattern Jesus gives his church for all prayer, moving from God-centered petitions (his name, kingdom, will) to our daily needs (bread, forgiveness, deliverance), so that we pray not as isolated individuals but together as a dependent community, with hope grounded not in our eloquence but in Christ's cross.

Psalm 19 corrects the modern evangelical tendency toward inward, subjective introspection by modeling an outward and upward orientation; looking to creation and Scripture; and by showing that even self-examination must be God-centered rather than self-absorbed.

For the Christian, living with a clear-eyed awareness of death's certainty; like the Apostle Paul awaiting execution; should shape and deepen present joy, driving us to pour out our lives as a sacrificial offering and to finish strong in the faith rather than fear the end.

Following the pattern of Psalm 126 and John Newton's New Year practice, believers should stand on the 'hilltop of time' at year's end to remember past grace, pray for present renewal in dry seasons, and faithfully sow in tears now, trusting God's generosity to bring a future harvest of joy.

Because believers are united to Christ, the beloved Son, they receive the very same love the Father has for the Son; not a generic, partial, diminished, derivative, or conditional love; so assurance must rest not on performance or feelings but on this union, and obedience should flow from resting in that already-secured love.

Jesus commands his troubled disciples; and us; to replace troubled hearts not with mere positivity but with faith in God and in Christ, faith anchored specifically in his promise to go prepare an eternal home through his death and to return and bring his people to himself forever.

Through the three episodes of 1 Kings 17; provision at the brook, provision for the widow, and the raising of her son; Elijah's life shows that only the living God, not idols like Baal or modern substitutes, can truly give life, a truth now fulfilled and anchored historically in the resurrection of Christ.

On the road to Emmaus, Jesus revealed himself to the two disciples not through a spectacular appearance but through opening the Scriptures, and that same pattern continues today: wherever the gospel is preached, the Holy Spirit makes that place a 'gospel road' where hearts can burn and eyes can be opened to the risen Christ without having been physically present.

Unless a person sees their own spiritual poverty and inability to earn salvation through good works, they will never savor the abounding, impossible-to-earn grace of Christ; salvation is entirely God's miraculous work, not human achievement.

Because God gave up his own Son for us at the cross, believers can be repeatedly persuaded that God is for them; both by fighting against their enemies (sin, Satan, fear, weakness, suffering) and by graciously giving them everything they need to reach eternal glory.

Grace produces humility: the three rhetorical questions of 1 Corinthians 4:7 expose that every difference, gift, and achievement in the Christian's life; including throughout the past year; is wholly received from God, leaving no ground for boasting.

Samson's story, spanning Judges 13-16, teaches how dangerous spiritual adultery is: it makes sin feel normal, blinds and destroys those who flirt with it, yet even a foolish, self-serving deliverer cannot thwart God's sovereign plan to save his people, ultimately pointing forward to Christ, the Savior Samson could never be.

Through a heart attack and open-heart surgery, the preacher learned that God's sovereign providence uses adversity to teach dependence, that he can do impossible things by God's strength, and that God loves him even in fear and doubt.

Solomon's closing charge in Ecclesiastes is not to spend life trying to avoid death, but to spend, enjoy, and commit one's life fully to God and to Christ, because death itself is what gives urgency and meaning to living now.
