Mark 15 exposes four different responses to Jesus at the cross; unbelieving religious leaders whose jealousy turns to murderous mockery, Pilate whose fear of man leads him to abandon truth, Jesus who stays focused on evangelizing, fulfilling Scripture, and dying for sinners, and disciples like Simon, the centurion, the women, and Joseph who join Jesus in his suffering; and calls hearers to examine their own motives for following Christ.

Jesus, though rejected by the religious leaders who condemned him for truly claiming to be the Son of God, and denied by his own disciple Peter who followed at a distance, suffered that rejection in our place so that we could be accepted by God.

In Gethsemane, Jesus resolves the tension between knowing God's loving character and facing a terrifying calling by prayerfully submitting his will to the Father, and this same submission; not the disciples' sleepy weakness or Judas's wicked betrayal; is what secures our salvation as it fulfills the very Scriptures Jesus had already predicted.

Jesus is the true Passover lamb, and by his blood poured out in the new covenant, God's judgment passes over everyone who trusts in him, just as it passed over Israel in Egypt.

Following Jesus rightly means moving beyond merely knowing facts about Christ to actually knowing him as both David's son and David's Lord, matching an honest inward life to one's outward profession rather than hypocrisy, and giving oneself to him wholly and sacrificially; like the widow's two coins; rather than only when convenient.

Jesus' authority is unquestionable because it belongs to him inherently as God, and it is undefeated because though the religious leaders rejected and killed him, God has made him the cornerstone of his kingdom; so every person must either submit to that authority in faith or be broken by it in judgment.

Through Jesus' journey to Jerusalem, his rebuke of James and John, and his healing of blind Bartimaeus, Mark 10 reveals that God's power looks nothing like worldly power: it is cloaked in suffering and self-giving, it saves through the cross and resurrection, it produces servant leadership rather than domination, and it seeks out the needy who cry for mercy.

Jesus answers today's controversial questions about no-fault divorce, gay marriage and polygamy, remarriage, and abortion by grounding marriage and family in God's creation design and by exposing the hardness of heart behind our controversies, rather than deferring to cultural opinion.

Being genuinely on 'Team Jesus' isn't determined by political or theological tribe but by three marks Jesus lays out in Mark 9:33-50: humility that seeks to serve rather than be served, helpfulness that refuses tribalism toward other Christians doing God's work, and holiness that ruthlessly mortifies sin because the stakes are heaven or hell.

Public power in ministry and life is not self-generated but flows from private piety; genuine faith, secret prayer, and gospel meditation; so that spiritual powerlessness in public exposure reveals a deficiency in private devotion to God.

The gospel of Jesus gathers the unclean and marginalized; a Gentile Syrophoenician woman and a deaf-mute man; into the center of God's kingdom, showing that true desperation brought to Jesus is rewarded with inclusion and healing, in contrast to the Pharisees' exclusionary religion.

The kingdom of God, symbolized by a lamp on a stand, is meant to be seen and not hidden; true kingdom life is public, holy, and missionary; and the kingdom rewards those who actually listen to and obey Jesus with faith, while unbelief forfeits everything.
